This is no joke! It's real!!

This has been verified by the "powers that wanna be". A virus is going around Fidonet.

The origin of this virus is known to be from all Zones and even "Othernets". That's right! It is true!!

This virus infects your Echomail and is very clever. All that is required to activate this virus is to read an Echomail message from someone outside of your Zone, Region or Net.

This virus originated when Zones, Regions and Nets wanted control of Fidonet for themselves. The virus is so constructed that it is not visible and can't be read by Nodes or Users from the Zone, Region or Net that it originates from. In this way, the virus can't infect it's own.

The most common effect of this virus is to start a "flame war" between Fidonet members. This "flame war" is then escalated by variations of the virus contained in reply messages to others. The reply messages may be read by the Fidonet member(s) that sent the original virus and members of their own Zone, Region or Net. This is a flaw in the virus since it can then infect the members of the originator's Zone, Region or Net and cause "flame wars" within any Zone, Region or Net thereafter. There is a variation of this virus that reconstructs replies to cause those in the originator's Zone, Region or Net to sympathize with the originator and therefore reply with more virus infected message to other Zones, Regions or Nets and propagate the "flame war" to even greater extremes.

In rare cases, generally when a Sysop or User actually prints a hard copy of the virus infected message, it can be spread throughout your family. This is especially true if your family is into reading Fidonet messages and participating in Fidonet Echomail.

BEWARE!

The variations of this virus are too many to list. Your best bet is to isolate yourself from all other Zones, Regions and Nets except for your own. This is recommended by the "powers that wanna be". NEVER read or reply to any message from someone outside your Zone or Region and use care when reading messages from outside your Net.
